Abstract

The scientific miracle of the Qur’an is in finding a clear reference to what has been described as a miraculous scientific point in at least one of the verses of the Qur’an, and this reference should point towards a scientific mystery i.e. it should be information from the hidden realm about something that was not known during the time of revelation of the Qur’an but rather, was subsequently discovered [by scientists]. Dr. Mohammad Tahir Al-Qadri, a leading Sunni scholar of Pakistan, has embarked upon the scientific exegesis of Qur’anic verses in some of his works. In his opinion, Qur’anic teachings are in complete harmony with the present scientific advances and since the Qur’an is all-encompassing, all the scientific and technical advancements have been alluded to in the Qur’an.

In the present paper, after examining his views on scientific exegesis, eleven of Dr. Qadri’s scientific interpretations in the field of natural sciences have been reviewed and critiqued. According to the conditions for the scientific miraculousness of the Qur’an, the correct instances that he has expounded in relation to the scientific topics mentioned in the Qur’an are: the discussion on the movements of the sun, the allusions to the big bang, the six stages of creation, the spread of the earth, the seven skies, the darkening of the stars and the light of the moon. All these are scientific wonders of the Qur'an. The supposed allusions to black holes, planets, journeying to the moon and the elliptical shape of the earth, are some of the inaccurate instances that he cites which actually stem from the false adaptation and imposition of scientific theories on the Qur’an.
